Poems about a Rooster — Part 2
From a Selection of Ancient Chinese Poems by my Grandfather, Tien Chen
Five Virtues of a Rooster — 《
‘A rooster has five virtues’ was a popular saying in ancient China.
Culture
A rooster has culture with its beaming crown.
Valiance
A rooster stands valiantly with its intimidating spurs.
Bravery
A rooster bravely attacks in the presence of an enemy.
Benevolence
A rooster clucks to let others join when feeding.
Trust
A rooster crows everyday in anticipation of sunrise; people trust the rooster to let them know when it is time to wake up.
Here is a beautiful painting by my grandfather depicting the five virtues of a rooster. I love how poised the rooster is, as if it is ready for battle. I love the detail on the rooster’s spurs and the sharpness of its claws. I love the simple and striking colours of red and black, and the contrast between the powerful and delicate strokes of the paintbrush.
